while on a three hour drive to the high desert of central oregon i pass through the majestic cascade mountains still capped in winter’s fortress. aside from drivers tailgating itching to go faster than the 60mph of energy my small scion engine generates along the two-lane highway through the mountain pass, the trip went without a hitch, my mind wondered across spacious landscape skyscrapers of granite decorating the horizon. snow clung to the ground in spots giving way to the inevitable.
steely dan sings forth from six car speakers, air vibrates “…a world of my own i’ll make it my home sweet home…” i’m in heaven, on earth that is, then out of the cloudy, blue skies the sign post up ahead: ALTERNATE ROUTE signifying construction and detours not always benefiting the driver. soon road work eases and the countryside resumed it’s magical attraction and, as with such openness suddenly: ALTERNATE ROUTE equals ALTERNATE FACTS leaps from all the vastness outside my window. the taking of a different path to get where one needs to get.
fortunately, one is temporary.
Ah, “Deacon Blues”, a good road song, easy to sing along. I love road trips as well, and enjoy the Ashland to Bend drive through the high desert and volcanic sights, thinking about what was and what might be. Lovely post. Cheers
